Good Day New York with Greg Kelly and Rosanna Scotto

Not to publicize Fox 5 news channel, but I always listen the duo of Greg Kelly and Rosanna Scotto on morning news and liked it because they keep me engaged.
It is not all about the latest news around the town or country but the way the news being told that keeps me engaged. Few things that make this duo popular is their voice, their impromptu complement to each other, and sharing their own experiences regarding the news. I think many news anchors has a great voice which is their distinguished quality so does this duo has. During news and in between news, they add their own material in the context of the news which I think a great quality for a story teller or a leader in an organization. Also, they add their own experiences in the context of the news which also adds a flare to the program.
I would learn impromptu adjustments in my speech and adding my own experiences appropriately to make my communication more influential.

Business Analysis

An electronics division (XYZ) of a multi-national company is a manufacturer of semi-conductor parts for electronics industry OEM. XYZ’s product gets used in hi-tech electronics gadgets such as cell phones, LCD/HDTV, laptops etc.
The technology industry is cyclical and can be looked at as volatile. This inherent nature of this industry affects XYZ to stay profitable in the business. There is always new technology in the market and XYZ should adapt to this new technology by updating their product features. This is the primary threatening market force for this industry. This also demands a strong R&D group and good emphasize on new product development.
XYZ’s mission statement says: “Improving Productivity and Advancing Technology”. To engage employees with the mission statement, XYZ organizes annual meeting in a conference room. Top management such as President and Director level people presents company’s performance. Management also provides insight of recent dynamics in the market such as increasing prices of certain raw material, new product developments, key customer feedback, and trend in operating profit. At the beginning of each year, the President sends an e-mail to all employees with highlights of the previous year and where company can still improve as a team.

The workforce at XYZ looks very much involved in productivity. There is a dedicated team for productivity who runs kaizen events with employees from all areas throughout the year. Such events kept employees engaged with the goal of productivity. The strong R&D group is always involved in updating technology to keep up with upcoming trend, to modify operations to improve efficiency, and roll out new product designs. R&D stay connected with operations through new product designs. Such companywide efforts helps employees to stay engaged with company’s mission.

Statement to the Team

I would like to take this opportunity to share my thoughts on the past year and how we are positioned for 2011.  I think you will agree with me that this year’s challenges stemmed from increasing product demand and acute price pressure.

Due to the global recovery, and solid positioning in overseas we saw a dramatic 35% increase in sales over 2009.  This helped us to increase our market share by 2%.  All of our products have become more challenging to produce and require greater attention to detail.  We will need to rely on efficiency improvements more than ever before as we continue to grow.

While we have good quality systems and - relative to the overwhelming majority of businesses - very good quality, it is clear we need to improve.  Given the recent price pressure and thin margins in the electronics market we simply can no longer afford the costs associated with non-conformities.

As we close out 2010, I want to say that I am acutely aware of the effort which everyone provides in order for XYZ to be successful.  I am very thankful and appreciative of this effort and hope that each of you share in the satisfaction of a job well done.

Assignment 1: Organizational Communication

I have had an experience with St Francis hospital in Tulsa, OK where I noticed communication between employees of different shifts is very instrumental and how this hospital manages to do this very effectively. Most of the shift timings are 8 to 12 hours. So in a typical week you might see 3 to 6 different nurses. Despite different nurses they maintained the patient knowledge and his medications very well. That too if patients are under diagnosis for multiple reasons then also employees manage their service level without any drop in intensity. For the variety of work nurses do and the nature of job where there is ideally no errors, this is best example of organizational communication. On the other hand, I had an experience with a cable company, Wind Stream. I was shopping for triple bundle deal and was checking on Wind Stream website. It said online that prices may vary depending on your area and availability. To know the final price, I have to create an account. After I checked the prices, I decided not to pursue further. But later in a month, I received the payment due statement from Wind Stream. Of course, I called the customer service and explained that I neither initiated the service nor any Wind Stream associate installed any services at my residence. The argument that I got is the service was set up from outside the home. As I never signed any papers that service is installed, I put my case and finally a complaint. But every time, I had to explain the whole situation to the representative. It took me three months to convince them that I am not using their services. There seems like a very ineffective communication in this organization.
