Annual Safety Day

My Dear Colleagues,

We will be getting together on our annual Safety Commitment day to step back from our routine operations and think of how we can add or identify safety to our routine jobs.

During the visit of Director of Global Safety we spoke about the need to stay focused on safety and how even the simplest task can lead to an injury when not focused.  This year in XYZ we have had two such incidents where lack of momentary focus and lack of hazard recognition resulted in injuries. This reminds us how quickly an event can happen and how we need to be vigilant at all times.

This week in XYZ’s Europe location, an incident occurred while an associate was moving heavy products in a cart.  An obstruction caused the cart to tip and the associate, attempting to prevent the products from falling, ended up with a wrist fracture.  During our Safety Commitment day this issue will be covered in more detail.  It is again a reminder of how we need to always be focused on our tasks and the potential hazards that may exist while we are doing them.

I fully recognize that the plants are very busy and there is always pressure to do it quickly.  I am asking each of you to always remember that safety is the priority and condition of our job. For our Safety Commitment day I encourage you to bring more ideas that will make our workplace safer.

  1. I thought this was a great message because you stated the main point of the message in the first sentence- the announcement of the Safety Commitment Day. It was unexpected as you presented an example for the reasoning for the safety day-the fractured wrist. Overall i think this is a very effective message.

  3. I like the introduction, "My Dear Colleagues". It made it personal and sincere, which ties into the concern for your employees safety. The fact that you care about your employees, suggests that you take their safety very seriously and that safety day is not just a mandated task.

  4. Hussain,
I think your message sends a strong message. The fact that your company is setting time aside to have an Annual Safety Day is incredible. Although a couple of employees were victims of minor accidents over the year, this statement reinforces that you do not want these accidents to be repeated. Furthermore, an Annual Safety Day lets employees know that you care about them and want them to be safe while on the job. Unfortunately, many companies fail to have meetings of this sort until something terrible happens and other companies fail to have them altogether. I think all companies should have an Annual Safety Day that consisted of company-wide employee input.

  5. The story about the wrist injury made this sticky for me. Without the story, this might have been received as just more "preaching" on the topic of safety.
